General Function

GENERAL FUNCTION

The Research Specialist carries out specific research objectives or other projects defined by the Principal Investigator. The duties of the Research Specialist will vary in level of responsibility and complexity depending on the grant project.

Description of Primary Duties

The Research Specialist will be focused on botanical identification of terrestrial plants of the central US. The RS will support the terrestrial monitoring program through field identification of plants, collecting plant specimens for vouchers, study, and identification, developing training materials, and other duties as needed. The RS will assist other staff to learn to identify plants relevant to Network parks, including both tallgrass prairie and woodland species. The RS will spend 50-60 days in the field per year.

Education: A Bachelor’s degree is required; a graduate degree is preferred.

Skills Effective organizational, interpersonal, and communication skills are required. Must have the ability to work effectively with students, faculty, and staff, as well as to communicate effectively with off-campus collaborators. Proficiency with basic spreadsheet, graphics, and word processing software is required. Other specific requirements depend upon the particular position. The ability to develop knowledge of, respect for, and skills to engage with those of other cultures or backgrounds is required.

Additional Qualifications

Strong background in botany and field identification of plants. Ability to travel, carry up to 40 pounds in a backpack, walk in uneven terrain over long distances, and work outdoors in all weather conditions. We encounter, ticks, snakes, mosquitoes, and other insects during our work.
