General Function

The Director of the School of Nursing is responsible for administering the School of Nursing, an academic unit within a college. Responsibilities include, but are not limited to, faculty recruitment and development, faculty evaluation, program development, program review, curriculum development, student advisement, budgeting and budget control, class schedule planning, and general supervision of the teaching, research, service, and related scholarly activities of the school.

Description of Primary Duties

The position is a 12-month, tenure-track faculty appointment with overall responsibility for: administration of school of nursing/programs; curriculum evaluation and development/program development; student admissions, advisement and evaluation; faculty mentoring in research and teaching, faculty and staff supervision and evaluation; development activities; general outreach activities; and teaching, research, and service. The Director, assures program compliance with the criteria for accreditation from the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE) and is accountable for program administration, including budget and resource management.

Minimum Acceptable Qualifications

The minimum acceptable qualifications for the position of Director of the School of Nursing are prescribed by the College Dean in concert with guidance from the Provost. A terminal degree is required. A demonstrated commitment to promoting a diverse environment is required.

Additional Qualifications

The position requires an earned Doctorate in nursing or related academic field (PhD, EdD, DNSc, DNP, etc.) with relevant academic and clinical experience; eligible for Missouri RN licensure; a masters in nursing; sustained record of scholarship including peer-reviewed publications; commitment to obtaining and managing grants and other external funding; record of teaching excellence; Successful candidates must present:
• Credentials for appointment to Associate or Full Professor level including a distinguished record of teaching, service, and scholarship meriting the rank of associate or full professor with tenure
• Evidence of previous effective university administration or leadership roles
• Involvement with academic strategic planning, curriculum planning, faculty recruitment, development and evaluation, fundraising, student recruitment and retention, program assessment and budget and resource management
• Demonstrated interest in providing quality educational programs and innovation in the education/training of nurses
• Experience gaining and maintaining accreditation for academic programs
• Experience mentoring faculty and students
• Outstanding interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills to lead a team toward goal achievement
• Experience working with multiple constituencies and the experience or potential to build effective collaborations within the department, as well as with the University and community
• Ability to lead through democratic team building and promote cohesiveness and a culture that values diverse views and perspectives
• Demonstrated knowledge and understanding of multicultural and diversity issues
