General Function

The primary duty of the Professional Education Advisor is to assist undergraduate education students in the development of academic schedules appropriate for their stated educational goals, including special education, early childhood, elementary, and middle school programs and to provide information about teacher certification requirements for the state of Missouri. The Advisor maintains necessary records and files to monitor the academic progress of students, refers students to resources within the University that provide assistance to students having difficulty, supports student success and retention, reviews transfer evaluation forms on all transfer students, and represents the College of Education and meets with families of prospective students during Student Orientation and Registration (SOAR) sessions.

Description of Primary Duties

Advising undergraduate education students
Maintaining needed records
Monitoring progress of students
Represents MSU COE department at recruitment events, travels in-state for recruitment events and meets with families of prospective students
Is responsible for coordinating all COE recruitment related events that are aligned with the Admissions Office calendar

Minimum Acceptable Qualifications

Education: A Bachelor’s degree, preferably in Education or a related field, is required; a Master’s degree in Education is preferred.

Experience: At least one year of experience in teaching, counseling, and/or advisement at the public school and/or university level is required, where knowledge of policies and administrative procedures in education is gained. Experience with early childhood, elementary, middle school, and special education advising, an education program, or the teacher certification process is required. Experience in advising students from rural, urban, and diverse backgrounds is preferred.

Skills: Excellent interpersonal skills, in particular the ability to work with the public in person and by telephone, are required. Strong oral and written communication and organizational skills are required. Computer literacy is required. The ability to develop knowledge of, respect for, and skills to engage with those of other cultures or backgrounds is required.

Other: Responsibilities may require travel to locations outside the city of Springfield and/or overnight travel.
