General Function

The Department Head is responsible for administering an academic department within a college which may include and is not limited to, faculty recruitment and development, faculty evaluation, program development, program review, curriculum development, student advisement, departmental budgeting and budget control, class schedule planning, and general supervision of the teaching, research, and service and related scholarly activities of the department.

Description of Primary Duties

• 12-mo position, initial 5-yr apt with annual review.
• Work with Dean and Admin team to advance concerns of the Dept, College and Univ;
• Ensure high standards for students, faculty and staff;
• Uphold personal/professional integrity;
• Effective communication for faculty, staff and students;
• Recruit and retain students;
• Oversee student advisement;
• Evaluate and recommend faculty for tenure, promotion, salary, leave and awards.
• Recruit and mentor faculty;
• Provide leadership in strategic planning;
• Administer academic programs of Dept;
• Prepare schedules and faculty assignments;
• Teaching in discipline;
• Partake in outreach activities;
• Sustain ties with alumni;
• Maintain involvement in local, regional, national prof organizations;
• Supervise support personnel;
• Manage dept facilities and equipment;
• Plan and oversee dept budgets;
• Promote fundraising for the Dept;
• Perform duties as assigned by the Dean

Minimum Acceptable Qualifications

The minimum acceptable qualifications for the position of Department Head are prescribed by the College Dean in concert with guidance from the Provost. A demonstrated commitment to promoting a diverse environment is required.

Additional Qualifications

• Earned PhD in Physics or closely related discipline
• The ranking of Full or Distinguished Professor in the MSU PAMS Department
• A record of excellence in university-level teaching, research and service
• Excellent leadership experience
• A leadership style that is visionary and collaborative
• Excellent organizational and interpersonal skills
• Demonstrated knowledge of effective strategies for working with diverse faculty, staff and students
• Outstanding written and oral communication skills
• Outstanding candidates will have experience with grant writing and research funding, administration of interdisciplinary programs, development of Student Learning Outcomes, program assessment plans, and a record of participation in outreach activities
